Take Home Ration (THR) is provided in the form of a ready to eat mix locally called ‘Chhatua’ and eggs to children (6 months to 3 years), pregnant and lactating women and out of school adolescent girls (11-14 years). Children (6 months to 3 years) are additionally provided with suji halwa premix and groundnut chikki are provided to Pregnant and Lactating Mothers. The menu has been vetted by National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and the nutritional value of SNP is greater than what has been prescribed by GoI. Ration cost has been standardised and THR menu has been developed taking into account the calorie and protein requirement for each category of beneficiary.

Implementation of Take Home Ration (THR) has been decentralised involving the engagement of local SHGs in the preparation and supply of THR to the AWCs, thereby eliminating the involvement of contractors and other suppliers. In the decentralised system, wheat is supplied to the SHGs by FCI. All other ingredients for preparation of THR are procured by the SHGs themselves.

Fixed Day Approach: Days of the month have been fixed for mixing of ingredients and for distribution of the THR to the AWCs. Mixing of ingredients for preparation of Chhatua is done on 23rd of every month and distribution of THR is done on 1st of the month at the AWCs. Members of the District and Block level squads visit the SHGs for monitoring the preparation and supply of THR to the AWCs.

Involving Community in Monitoring:

Jaanch Committee is a grassroot level monitoring committee including representation of different members from the village. Members of Jaanch and Mothers committee monitor the supply of THR at the AWCs by the SHGs and distribution of the same to the beneficiaries. They also visit the households of the beneficiaries to monitor consumption and counsel the beneficiaries on the benefits of THR.

Ration cost has been standardised and food is provided to the children as per the weekly menu developed for morning snacks, HCM taking care of the calorie and protein requirement of the beneficiaries.
