With the objective of strengthening women’s empowerment and ensuring the safety, dignity, and secure future of girls, the Department of Women & Child Development, Government of Odisha has launched the Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana (MKBY). The scheme is designed to provide financial and social support to girls from economically weaker families at the time of marriage while encouraging marriage at the legally prescribed age.
The scheme also aims to promote widow remarriage and discourage the practice of dowry, thereby enabling widows and vulnerable women to rebuild their lives with dignity, social acceptance, and economic support.
Under the scheme, financial assistance of Rs. 60,000/- per beneficiary is provided, out of which Rs. 45,000 is transferred directly to the bride through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) within seven days of marriage. The initiative reduces the financial burden on economically vulnerable families and ensures timely support to newly married women.
The programme was launched in Ganjam district and has received encouraging response across the State.
