The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 seeks to prevent child marriages by prescribing the minimum legal age of marriage as 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. The Act provides for punishment of offenders with imprisonment up to two years and a fine up to ₹1 lakh. It also empowers Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPOs) to prevent and take action against child marriages
