The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 seeks to prevent child marriages by prescribing the minimum legal age of marriage as 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. The Act provides for punishment of offenders with imprisonment up to two years and a fine up to ₹1 lakh. It also empowers Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPOs) to prevent and take action against child          marriages

The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 establishes a robust institutional framework to prevent and address the issue of child marriage in Odisha. The Act seeks to prevent child marriages by prescribing the minimum legal age of marriage as 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. The Act provides for punishment of offenders with imprisonment up to two years and a fine up to ₹1 lakh. It also empowers Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPOs) to prevent and take action against child  marriages.

At the district and community levels, CDPOs (Child Development Project Officers), Principals, Headmasters, Panchayat Executive Officers, and Wardens/Matrons of residential hostels under the ST & SC Department, are designated as Child Marriage Prohibition Officers. These officers play a pivotal role in grassroots implementation, awareness generation, and direct intervention to prevent child marriages.

Furthermore, Child Marriage Information Officers (CMIOs) have been declared—this includes Headmasters of Schools and Principals of Colleges, empowering them to report cases of child marriage. State has develop State strategic Action Plan 2024-29 for prohibition of Child Marriage at grassroot level.
